My name is Ruth Mantle and I am the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Nurse Consultant for NHS Highland. I feel privileged to have been awarded a ‘Winston Churchill Memorial Trust’ Travel fellowship, even more so after finding out that I am the 5000th Fellow since the Trust was established when Sir Winston Churchill died in 1965.

I will be travelling to Australia and the USA to explore innovative ways for staff to connect with people living with dementia in the everyday interactions they share together. I will be exploring how to develop ways to strengthen person and relationship centred care, as well as identifying ways to support staff to see the person beyond the diagnosis of dementia. I hope to explore opportunities for meaningful engagement and the importance of Being Present. As a mindfulness practitioner I would also like to understand the benefits of mindfulness for people living with dementia and experience mindfulness-based dementia care.

My fellowship is part of a partnership with the Burdett Trust for Nursing, The Royal College of Nursing and FoNS Centre for Nursing Innovation as part of the Medical, Health and Patient Care category.
